Steve LaMere
Steve is part of the next generation of elite coaches in the Metroplex and returns to Plano West for his third year. Steve will again coach PWHC’s Varsity Gold team and will assume responsibilities as Director of Coaches. A native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Steve practically grew up in hockey skates. He learned to skate at a very young age and developed a passion for the game of hockey. After a successful playing career, Steve has been giving back to the game for the past nine years through individual instruction, training camps, and team development. As one of the most sought after coaches in the area, Steve has developed the reputation for helping players get the most out of their game. His intensity and passion for teaching have become his calling card for the Metroplex’s elite hockey players. Steve also brings a tremendous travel hockey coaching experience to PWHC. He joined the Alliance staff in 2006 as head coach of their AAA PeeWee team which went on to win the U12 Tier I Texas State Championship. Steve has also coached in the Dallas Stars organization with their Tier I AAA PeeWee squad. In addition to his Plano West duties, Steve returns to Alliance as the Director of Hockey Programs and the coach of its U14 Bantam AAA team.
Jaz Hayden
Jaz is one of the most successful coaches in the history of PWHC and returns to the coaching staff for the 2011 – 2012 season as the head coach of PWHC’s JV Gold team. Over the years his PWHC teams have won every possible championship and accolade. Most recently, his 2010 - 2011 JV Gold team won the DFW City Championship. He began playing hockey at the age of 4 in Welland, Ontario, Canada. He played AAA hockey from the age of 7 until the age of 15 for the Welland Tigers Organization. After minor hockey, he joined the Thorold Blackhawks Junior organization where he played 5 years and became the team’s all-time leading scorer, accumulating 380 points in 180 games. In addition to his extensive Plano West career, Jaz has coached both Tier I and Tier II teams, U10 to U18 across a number of Metroplex associations. He also was an instructor at the Con Tech hockey camp in Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada for 5 years. At this camp he coached Dan Paille, a first round pick of the Buffalo Sabres (20th overall) in the 2002 NHL draft. Jaz also provided personal instruction to Nathan Horton, who currently plays for the Boston Bruins of the NHL. As an 18 year old, Horton recently broke the NHL record as the youngest player ever to score on a penalty shot in an NHL game. Jaz also coaches the DJHA Squirt team and last summer he coached PWHC to the JV championship going 13-0.
Mike Salekin
The newest addition to the Plano West Coaching ranks is Mike Salekin, who will be leading the JV Silver team this year. Mike is a native of Castlegar, British Columbia. He has had an impressive playing career including NCAA Division 1 Hockey and Professional Hockey. Mike’s professional hockey experiences include time playing with the Reading Royals, Cincinnati Cyclones, Stockton Thunder, Victoria Salmon Kings and the Allen Americans. While playing pro hockey, Mike soaked up hockey expertise from many NHL Coaches and Players. He spent his off seasons as a head on ice instructor for Total Package Hockey in Huntsville, AL.
Mike received a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing while attending the University of Huntsville Alabama, and later went on to receive his Master’s in Business Administration. While playing professionally, Mike effectively developed a startup company called AMP (Athletic Mentoring Program). AMP gave several young athletes proper guidance and helped many obtain athletic scholarships. Mike currently works as a Market Analyst at EXCO Resources.
Mike is a very prepared and detail oriented individual. His coaching philosophy centers around discipline, teamwork, skill development, and fun. He is committed to excellence as a coach, and strives to get the best out of every single player.
